MICRO RESIDENCIES
Current Residency  |  Derek Sutherland  |  ‘The West Lothian Question’

You are invited to join ESW for a one-off viewing of the outcome of Derek’s work on Friday 11th April, 6-8pm, ESW Pavilion – refreshments will be served.

In March Derek Sutherland started his Micro Residency exploring ‘The West Lothian Question’.

In September 1990 the first plaque and sculpture in Britain to commemorate a UFO landing was erected in Livingston, Scotland (and later stolen). Bob Taylor, then a forestry worker employed by the Livingston Development Corporation, saw a larger circular sphere-like object, about 20ft across, whilst working on Dechmont Law. As he approached the object, two spheres, each about 3 feet wide with protruding spikes, dropped from the object, rolled towards him and attached themselves to his trousers. Interest in the incident, now World famous in the annals of UFOlogy has remained high. Mr Taylor died in 2007 from bronchial pneumonia, a well respected figure in the community.

To his death he maintained that he had been abducted by aliens. The journal Fortean Times remarked of this incident that ‘from a sceptical point of view’ it was ‘highly convenient that this event took place when it did. It gave a chance to promote this development zone to the world in a cheap and rapid manner.’ Indeed at the time of the incident Livingston was a newly formed New Town, soon to attract companies from across the globe and become the U.K s Silicon Glen.

Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop’s Artistic Programme Committee (APC) is presenting monthly micro residencies in ESW’s pavilion and project spaces.
These represent a series of cross-disciplinary, artistic initiatives and applications are welcomed for future projects. Please contact Gordon Munro or a member of the APC to discuss proposals.
