Professional Development Programme Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop’s professional development programme for artists is funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation to October 2009. The programme offers affordable training in artistic and related skills as well as talks, discussions and networking events. Working with Mac
An introduction to the basics of Mac use these sessions could provide a comprehensive introduction to basic applications for the complete novice, a session up to intermediate level or a brief introduction to some of the more advanced applications.

(1) Introduction
This is a comprehensive introduction for those who know nothing about Macs.

(2) Intermediate
This course is to teach these users how to get the best from some of the free Mac applications and some hints and tips in using the less well known features of the MacOS environment.

(3) Other Sessions
Basic Web page design using Dreamweaver
Basic Flash movie and slide show production
Basic Powerpoint slide show production
Basic use of Photoshop
Basic understanding of Computer hardware, OS and software
Creating an eBook using Microsoft Word

Wood Workshop
Training will be offered in the safe use of the Table saw, Band saw and the planer thicknesser. Participants will make a basic wood construction in order to develop an understanding of cutting lists, setting the saw accurately and construction. The session is aimed at enabling participants to work in a methodical and safe manner around equipment that has the potential to cause serious harm.

Metal Workshop
This session will demonstrate the safe use of equipment in the metal workshop. This would include TIG welding (only if specifically requested), MIG welding, Plasma cutting, Oxy-Acetylene heating and how to use the rollers. During the sessions participants are taught how to set the welder or plasma cutter for varying thicknesses of steel. Most of the session will involve a demonstration of the equipment followed by practice sessions for participants.

Final Cut Pro
A basic introduction to Final Cut Pro (an industry standard video editing package running on the Mac platform). Areas covered include introduction to the interface, capturing and importing media, editing, effects and output for different uses (DVD, Web, etc.). The session can be tailored to suit the specific needs of participants. It is suggested participants bring some Digital Video (on miniDV preferably) that they can work with.

Foundry Working
Opportunities to experiment with processes involved in foundry casting including mould-making, patination and casting techniques.

As part of Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop’s professional development programme a series of informal seminars/talks is being organized which will examine the relationships between the visual arts and a spectrum of other disciplines. As well as visual art the subjects of these seminars will range from architecture to psychology, technology to astronomy and will examine the interstitial nature of contemporary art practice.
