Iron Foundry Masterclass
Led by Aaron Juarros
Aaron is an artist from New Mexico whose own practice specializes in metal
casting, mould-making and furnace construction. He is currently completing
an MFA at Edinburgh College of Art and is a resident artist at Edinburgh
Sculpture Workshop.
This very successful masterclass ran over five days and afforded nine
artists an opportunity to learn basic greensand mould-making and iron
melting in a traditional coke-fuelled cupola.
Aaron had constructed the cupola at ESW over the summer months and had
already run a month-long aluminium casting project for 1st years at
Edinburgh College of Art School of Sculpture in collaboration with ESW's
Assistant Director, Gordon Munro. For the iron pouring we were fortunate to
have the excellent foundry team from Scottish Sculpture Workshop assisting
and on the fourth day we were joined by many more members and visitors who
wanted to watch the drama of the pour. An exhibition at the end of the
course enabled participants and visitors to share experiences about the
process.
