Evening Classes

  • Wood Carving

    Monday evenings, 6.30-9pm, 8 weeks

    3 courses:
    8 October to 26 November 2012
    28 January to 18 March 2013
    15 April to 3 June 2013

    This eight week course will teach students the skills of hand wood carving and the use of specialist wood carving tools.

    Led by an experienced artist (who works in both wood and stone), students can work in 3 dimensions or in relief from a provided block of wood, and will produce one finished piece by the end of the course.

    During the first session, students will have the chance to discuss their idea with the tutor and make a small clay model to work from. A range of relevant books will also available for reference and ideas.

    This course is suitable for students of all levels of experience from beginner.

  • Sculptural Ceramics

    Tuesday evenings, 6.30-9pm, 6 weeks

    1 course:
    29 January to 5 March 2013

    £140

    A 6 week course looking at contemporary sculptural ceramics to inspire students to make hand built pieces using slab building, coiling and pinch pots. Students can either produce a larger sculptural piece or a collection of smaller objects.

    Clays, firing and basic glaze included in costs, additional glazes can be bought from tutor as needed.

    (Tutor runs additional courses out with the ESW Sculpture Courses programme and can be contacted directly for further information.)

  • Working with Found Objects

    Tuesday evenings, 6.30-9pm, 6 weeks

    1 course:
    16 April to 21 May 2013

    £105

    This course will introduce students to the use of found objects in sculptural practice, following in the footsteps of artists like Marcel Duchamp.

    Each of the 6 weeks explores a different aspect of using and combining pre-existing objects, from driftwood and tools to furniture and domestic objects.

  • Clay Modelling, Clay Figure and Clay Portrait

    Clay Modelling

    Wednesday evenings, 3 to 31 October, 6.30-9pm and 1 weekend, Sat 1 & Sun 2 December, 10am-4pm

    This course offers an introduction to working with clay from a model in two poses. You will learn about handling clay and exploration of the proportions of the human figure and head. On completion of this course, you will have produced two finished pieces– a portrait and a figure. (Course includes the cost for one firing, additional firing available at £15.) Places limited to 10.

    Clay Figure

    Wednesday evenings, 23 January to 20 March 2013, 6.30-9pm, 9 weeks

    This course working with a model over a 9 week pose, offers the chance to spend time developing skills in handling clay and proportions of the human figure. On completion of this course, you will produce a single finished piece, and the course price includes the cost of the piece being fired.

    Clay Portrait

    Wednesday evenings, 10 April to 5 June 2013, 6.30-9pm, 9 weeks 

    £165

    This course working with a model over a 9 week pose, offers the chance to spend time developing skills in handling clay and proportions of the human head. On completion of this course, you will produce a single finished piece, and the course price includes the cost of the piece being fired. 

    All clay works to be fired should be left at ESW until they are dried and fired (usually takes 4-6 weeks). If removed before firing, ESW cannot guarantee to be able to include the piece at a later firing date without charge.

  • Stone Carving

    Thursday evenings, 6.30-9pm, 9 weeks

    3 courses:
    4 October to 29 November 2012 - FULLY BOOKED - Extra Tuesday class organised: 2 October to 27 November
    24 January to 21 March 2013
    11 April to 6 June 2013

    £165

    Using limestone, a relatively soft stone, students will learn the different techniques to produce a stone sculpture in three dimensions, and about the tools to achieve various surface textures.

    During the first session, students will have the chance to discuss their idea with the tutor and reference a range of relevant books, before producing a small clay model to work from.

    Finishing techniques and methods for presentation of finished pieces will be discussed in the later classes.

Free day session vouchers are included in the course prices shown above: all participants will be offered two free day sessions per course purchased from the 2010-2011 programme (except one day courses where one free Day Session will be offered)
