Both works reflect an interest in the history and folklore of the Highlands of Scotland. Sea Monument refers to the culture of the Picts, and the print ‘Froach’ the folk tales of the Gaelic / Celtic culture.
Biography
Will Maclean was born in Inverness in 1941 and has been a member of the Royal Scottish Academy since 1991. His other achievements include: The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts 1996; the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour 1997. Honorary Doctor of Letters, University of St Andrews 2000; MBE 2006; Emeritus Professor University of Dundee 2007; and Honorary Fellowship University of the Highlands Institute 2008.
Awards: Scottish Education Trust Bursary 1973; Scottish Arts Council Visual Art Bursary 1979; RSA Gillies Bequest Award 1998; Critics Award Edinburgh Festival 1992; Scottish Arts Council Award 1992; Civic Trust Award 1997; National Heritage Award 1997; Spirit of Scotland Award 1998; Creative Scotland Award 2000.
