The painting is inspired by visits to ancient sites in North Africa, Egypt, Syria and Jordan. The imagery is invented. The small bronzes are also the work of my imagination and the outcome of working the clay and searching for significance.
Biography
Born in Aberdeen 1940, Alexander Fraser studied at Gray’s School of Art and was appointed Lecturer in Painting in 1966. From 1981-1997 he was Senior Lecturer in Charge of Painting and retired from teaching in 1997. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1971 and, in 2007, received an Honorary Degree Doctor of Arts from the Robert Gordon University.
Awards: Eleven major awards including a travelling scholarship to France and Italy in 1964; RSA Latimer 1964 and Guthrie 1969 Awards; Abbey Premier Scholarship 1977; Sir William Gillies Scholarship to Egypt in 1980; First Prize - The Morrison Scottish Portrait Competition in 1991; First prize - The Noble Grossart Painting Competition in 1996.
Commissions: 30 Portrait Commissions; commissioned painting for Livingstone Hospital 1996; commissioned mural for Aberdeen Royal Infirmary 2002.
