Richard Demarco introduced Joseph Beuys and Tadeusz Kantor to each other as fellow members of the Faculty of his Edinburgh Festival experimental ‘Edinburgh Arts’ Summer School. His bronze defines the historic occasion when Richard Demarco introduced Joseph Beuys to Tadeusz Kantor in the living-room of his house at 29 Frederick Street. They are portrayed ‘in conversation’, seated at a bay window with a view of Edinburgh Castle behind them during the Edinburgh Festival 1973.
Biography
Richard Demarco is an artist, teacher and international promoter of the visual and performing arts. He has been one of Scotland’s most influential advocates for contemporary art through his work at the Traverse Theatre and Gallery, the Richard Demarco Gallery and the Demarco European Art Foundation, as well as in his professorship at Kingston University in London.
His work as a watercolourist is held in many international collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Britain, the Government Collection and the National Gallery of Lithuania.
Demarco’s contributions to contemporary art internationally have been recognised on numerous occasions, receiving the Polish Gold Order of Merit, the Cavaliere della Repubblica d’Italia, the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres de France and the Order of Commander of the British Empire, as well recognition as for introducing Joseph Beuys and Tadeusz Kantor to Britain in the 70’s.
Richard Demarco has experienced all the Edinburgh Festivals since their beginning in 1947 and he has presented countless exhibitions and productions for both the Official Festival and the Fringe Festival, the most notable ones being the exhibition ‘Strategy: Get Arts’ at The Edinburgh College of Art’ and two productions of ‘Macbeth’ on Inchcolm Island.
