John Byrne RSA
Title: Satyr
Date: 2009
Bronze, H 21 cms x D 18 x W13
This is my first bronze - I remember doing a small (3” high) clay figure about 40 years ago so it was really nice to get the opportunity to do something more ambitious.
Biography
After leaving Glasgow School of Art in 1962, John Byrne went to Italy. He was based in Perugia, but also visited Milan, Rome and Assisi and was much impressed by the Giotto frescos of the Life of St Francis. On returning from Italy, Byrne went to work for STV as a Graphic Artist.
Byrne’s first London show in 1967 allowed him to set out as full-time painter which he has been ever since. In 1977 he put on his first play, “Writer’s Cramp”, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe – the show went to the Bush Theatre in London. His second play, the ‘autobiographical’ “The Slab Boys”, opened at The Traverse in 1978 before transferring to The Royal Court Upstairs. TV series “Tutti Frutti” and “Your Cheatin’ Heart” followed for BBC TV in 1987 and 1990 respectively.
